Williams, “Buster,”

Williams, “Buster,” American bassist; b. Cam-den, N.J., April 17, 1942. He gained prominence in the 1960s playing for Gene Ammons, Sonny Stitt, Dakota Staton, Betty Carter, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, and Miles Davis. He sat in the Jazz Crusaders’ revolving bass chair from 1967 to 1969, then became a member of Herbie Hancock’s underrated but groundbreaking groups from 1969 to 1972. After leaving Hancock, he played with Dexter Gordon and Mary Lou Williams before joining the legendary Ron Carter Quartet. He has been primarily a sideman, playing with a wide array of artists, most notably Kenny Barron, with whom he was a member of the Thelonious Monk tribute group Sphere.
