Waldmann, Maria
Waldmann, Maria, Austrian mezzo-soprano; b. Vienna, 1842; d. Ferrara, Nov. 6, 1920. She studied in Vienna with Passy-Cornet and in Milan with Lamperti, making her debut as Pierotto in Linda di Chamounixin Pressburg in 1865. She then sang in Wiesbaden, Amsterdam, Trieste, and Moscow (with the Italian Opera, 1869-70), at La Scala in Milan (1871-72), and in Cairo (1873-76). She retired in 1876. Verdi admired her singing, and chose her for the premiere of his Requiem.
