Squire, W(illiam) Barclay
Squire, W(illiam) Barclay, English music librarian; b. London, Oct. 16, 1855; d. there, Jan. 13, 1927. He received his education in Frankfurt am Main and at Pembroke Coll., Cambridge (B.A., 1879; M.A., 1902). In 1885 he was placed in charge of the printed music in the British Museum, retiring as Assistant Keeper in 1920. He compiled catalogues of music for the British Museum (publ. in 1899 and 1912), and also the catalogue of the King’s Music Library (3 vols., 1927–29). He ed. (with J. Fuller Maitland) The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book (2 vols., London, 1899; reprint, N.Y., 1963), and also ed. Byrd’s masses, Purcell’s music for harpsichord, and Elizabethan madrigals.
