Schall, Richard

Schall, Richard, German musicologist; b. Dortmund, Dec. 3, 1922. He studied at the Univ. of Marburg (Ph.D., 1946, with the diss. Hugo Kaum Leben und Werk, 1863–1932: Ein Beitrag zur Musik der Jahrhundertwende; publ, in Regensburg, 1948); also received instruction in theory from H. Gebhard-Elsass and in conducting from H. von Waltershausen, and later attended the library school of the Bavarian State Library in Munich, where he took the senior librarian’s examination (1956). From 1962 to 1986 he was musicological adviser to the Bavarian Radio, for which he prepared various publications. He contributed numerous articles to Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart; also served as ed. of the Quellenkataloge zur Musikgeschichte (Wilhelmshaven, from 1966), the Taschenbücher zur Musikwissenschaft (Wilhelmshaven, from 1969), Veröffentlichungen zur Musikforschung (Wilhelmshaven, from 1972), and Paperbacks on Musicologi/ (N.Y., from 1980). His writings are of value for the bibliography of German musicology.
