Rother, Artur (Martin)
Rother, Artur (Martin) , German conductor; b. Stettin, Oct. 12, 1885; d. Aschau, Sept. 22, 1972. He studied piano and organ with his father, and also attended the univs. of Tübingen and Berlin. In 1906 he became a répétiteur at the Wiesbaden Opera. He was an assistant at the Bayreuth Festivals (1907–14), and from 1927 to 1934 he was Generalmusikdirektor in Dessau. In 1938 he went to Berlin as a conductor at the Deutsches Opernhaus, where he remained until 1958. He was also chief conductor of the Berlin Radio (1946–49).
