Ries, Franz

Ries, Franz , German violinist and music publisher, son of (Pieter) Hubert Ries; b. Berlin, April 7, 1846; d. Naumberg, June 20, 1932. He studied violin with his father and later with Massart and Vieuxtemps in Paris. His career as a concert violinist was brief, and in 1875 he entered the music publishing business. From 1881 to 1924 he was director of the firm Ries & Erler in Berlin; in 1924 his son Robert Ries (1889/1942) became the proprietor; after the death of Robert Ries, the firm was taken over by his 2 daughters.
