Prelleur, Peter

Prelleur, Peter , English organist, harpsichordist, and composer who flourished from 1728 to about 1755. He was active in London, where he became organist at St. Alban’s, Wood Street, in 1728. In 1735 he was elected first organist at Christ Church, Spitalfields. He also was harpsichordist and composer at the Goodman’s Fields Theatre (1728–37) and the New Wells Theatre (from 1737). His stage works included Harlequin Hermit, or The Arabian Courtezan, pantomime (London, 1739), Baucis and Philemon, interlude (London, 1740), and Harlequin Student, or The Fall of Pantomime, pantomime (London, 1741). Among his other works were orch. pieces, songs, and hymns. His Introduction to Singing (London, 1735) first appeared as Part 1 of The Modern Musick-master, or The Universal Musician (1731). With B. Smith, he ed. The Harmonious Companion, or The Psalm Singer’s Magazine (London, 1732).
