Petrov, Ivan (Ivanovich)
Petrov, Ivan (Ivanovich),prominent Russian bass; b. Irkutsk, Feb. 29, 1920. He studied with A. Mineyev at the Glazunov Music Coll. in Moscow (1938–39). He then joined the Kozlovsky opera group; became a soloist with the Moscow Phil, in 1941. In 1943 he joined the staff of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow; his most celebrated interpretation was in the title role of Boris Godunov, inviting comparisons with Chaliapin. He made several tours as a member of the Opera of the Bolshoi Theater in Europe, Japan, and the U.S.
