Petkov, Dimiter

Petkov, Dimiter, Bulgarian composer and conductor; b. Smolyan, May 4, 1919. He studied composition with Veselin Stoyanov at the State Academy of Music in Sofia, graduating in 1950; then went to Moscow for postgraduate studies in theory at the Cons. (1952–54). He taught theory at the State Academy of Music in Sofia (1949–52; 1954–58) and was director of the National Opera Theater; later served as president of the Union of Bulgarian Composers (1972–80).

dramatic:The Winding Path, children’s operetta (1956; Michailovgrad, Oct. 29, 1975); Restless Hearts, musical comedy (1960). chamber: 3 Polyphonic Pieces for Flute, Clarinet, and Bassoon (1953). vocal:The Sparks of October for Soloists, Children’s Chorus, and Orch. (1967); Rozhan Comes Down from Rhodopa, oratorio (1965); 5 cantatas: September Legend (1953), Communists (1956), Requiem for a Sailor (1967), Cantata about Paissy (1973), and Festive Cantata (1974); choruses; folk song arrangements.
