Payen, Nicolas
Payen, Nicolas , South Netherlands composer; b. Soignies, c. 1512; d. Madrid, after April 24, 1559. He studied at St. Vincent’s in Soignies. After serving as a choirboy in Charles V’s Spanish chapel, he was his clerc d’oratoire, chapelain des hautes messes (from 1540) and his maestro de capilla (from 1556). In 1558 he was awarded a canonry in the Tournai collegiate church. His extant works comprise 11 motets and 5 chansons.
