Old, Boris

Old, Boris, English organist, harpsichordist, and conductor; b. Bristol, July 9, 1897; d. Cambridge, Dec. 30, 1961. He was educated at the Royal Coll. of Music in London and was an organ scholar at Corpus Christi Coll., Cambridge. From 1929 to 1957 he was organist and choirmaster at King’s Coll., Cambridge, where he made the Christmas Eve Festival of 9 Lessons and Carols celebrated via the radio. He also was a lecturer on music at the Univ. of Cambridge (1936–58) and was conductor of its Musical Soc. (1938–54). He composed the carol Adam lay y-bounden (1957). In 1958 he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. As both a solo artist and conductor, Ord distinguished himself in an extensive repertoire.
