Novotný, Václav Juda

Novotný, Václav Juda, Czech writer on music and composer; b. Wesetz, Sept. 17, 1849; d. Prague, Aug. 1, 1922. He attended Ambros’s lectures in music history, studied violin with Bennewitz, singing with Pivoda and harmony with F. Blažek, and received instruction from Skuherský in Prague. After playing violin in the orch. of the Provisional Theater there, he contributed to various publications, including the journal Dalibor, which he edited (1875; 1979–80). Novotný prepared translations into Czech of some 100 opera libretti. Among his works were 2 operas, sacred music, choruses, vocal duets, songs, and about 300 folk song arrangements.
