Nicolescu, Marianna

Nicolescu, Marianna, Romanian soprano; b. Gavjani, Nov. 28, 1948. After studies in Romania, she pursued training at the Cons. Statale di Musica di St. Cecilia in Rome and with Elizabeth Schwarzkopf and Rodolfo Celletti. She made her debut in a television concert in Milan in 1972. Following an engagement as Beatrice di Tenda in Venice in 1975, she appeared in Florence as Violetta in 1976. On April 18, 1978, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Nedda. She made her first appearance at Milan’s La Scala in the premiere of Berio’s La vera storia in 1982, and made return visits there in 1987, 1988, and 1993. In 1984 she sang Donna Elvira at the Rome Opera. From 1986 to 1993 she made appearances at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and at the Munich Festival. In 1990 she was engaged as Elettra at the Salzburg Festival. She sang Donizetti’s Queen Elizabeth in Monte Carlo in 1992. In 1995 she returned to Munich as Anna Bolena.
