Mühlfeld, Richard (Bernhard Herrmann)

Mühlfeld, Richard (Bernhard Herrmann), famous German clarinetist; b. Salzungen, Feb. 28, 1856; d. Meiningen, June 1, 1907. He first studied the violin and played in the Meiningen Court Orch. then practiced on the clarinet without a teacher, and in 1876 became 1stclarinetist at the Saxe-Meiningen court. From 1884 to 1896 he was first clarinetist at the Bayreuth Festivals, and he became music director of the Meiningen Court Theater (1890). Brahms wrote for him the Trio, op.114 (for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano), the Quintet, op.115 (for Clarinet, 2 Violins, Viola, and Cello), and the 2 clarinet sonatas, op. 120.
