Moberg, Carl Allan

Moberg, Carl Allan, eminent Swedish musicologist; b. Östersund, June 5, 1896; d. Uppsala, June 19, 1978. He studied with Norlind at the Univ. of Uppsala (1917–24), then took some lessons with Berg in Vienna, and took a course in musicology with Wagner in Fribourg (1924–27). He received his Ph.D. in 1927 from the Univ. of Uppsala, and later studied with Handschin in Basel (1934–35). He was a reader (1928–47) and a prof. (1947–61) at the Univ. of Uppsala; as well as ed. of Svensk tidskrift for musikforskning (1945–61) and of Studia musicologica upsaliensia (1952–61). Among his achievements was a journey to Lapland in the north to collect native songs. He was honored with a Festschrift on his 65th birthday in 1961. Moberg distinguished himself particularly in the study of music history and ethnomu-sicology.
