Opera critic, Spectator, 1970–90, Evening Standard 1990–2, The Times 1992–2002. Assoc. ed. Opera from 1976, deputy ed. from 1984, ed. from 1986. Translator of several operas, incl. Rusalka, Osud, and Tannhäuser. OBE 2002.
