Marx, Joseph (b Graz, 1882; d Graz, 1964). Austrian composer. Prof. of theory, Vienna Acad. of Mus. 1914–22, dir. 1922–4. Rector, Vienna Hochschule für Musik, 1924–7. Mus. critic, Neues Wiener Journal 1931–8. Taught at Graz. Univ. 1947–57. Noted for his 120 songs, but also wrote Romantic pf. conc., Autumn Symphony, pf. qt., vc. sonata, choral works, etc.
