Markwort, Johann Christian
Markwort, Johann Christian, German tenor and voice teacher; b. Reisling, near Braunschweig, Dec. 13, 1778; d. Bessungen, near Darmstadt, Jan. 13, 1866. He took courses in theology in Leipzig, then went to Vienna to study voice. He sang opera in Munich and in Liechtenstein, and in 1810 was engaged as choirmaster in Darmstadt. In 1830 he dedicated himself entirely to teaching. He publ, pedagogical books: Umriss einer Gesammt-Tonwissenschaft überhaupt wie auch einer Sprachund Tonsatzlehre (Darmstadt, 1826), Gesang-, Ton- und Rede-Vortraglehre (Mainz, 1827), and Über Klangveredelung der Stimme (Mainz, 1847); also a piano method.
