Lindholm, Berit (real name, Berit Maria Jonsson)

Lindholm, Berit (real name, Berit Maria Jonsson), Swedish soprano; b. Stockholm, Oct. 18, 1934. She studied with Britta von Vegesack and Käthe Sundström in Stockholm. She made her debut as Mozart’s Countess at the Royal Opera there in 1963. She first appeared at London’s Covent Garden as Chrysothemis in Elektra(1966), and then sang at the Bayreuth Festivals (1967–74). She made her U.S. debut as Brünnhilde with the San Francisco Opera (1972); her Metropolitan Opera debut followed in N.Y. in the same role on Feb. 20, 1975. She became best known for her Wagnerian roles.
