Lindberg, Christian, extraordinary Swedish trombonist; b. Stockholm, Feb. 12,1958. He took up the trombone at the age of 17; after playing in the Royal Opera Orch. in Stockholm (1977–78), he studied at the Stockholm Musikhögskolan, in London, and in Los Angeles (1978–82). His remarkable mastery of his instrument led to a career as a trombone virtuoso, and he subsequently appeared as a soloist with the major orchs., a recitalist, and a chamber music player in the principal music centers the worldover; also gave master classes and designed new instruments. Lindberg’s repertoire is vast, embracing Baroque works on original instruments, Classical and Romantic scores, and a provocative cornucopia of contemporary pieces, including those by Berio, Cage, Dutilleux, Hindemith, Kagal, and Stockhausen. He also commissioned works, including the trombone concertos of Sandstrom, Xenakis, and Takemitsu.
