Léner Quartet
Léner Quartet. Hung. str. qt. formed in 1918 by 4 members of Budapest Opera Orch.— Jenö Léner (b Szabadka, 1894; d NY, 1948), Joseph Smilovits, Sandor Roth, and Irme Hartman. Début Budapest 1919, Vienna and Paris 1920, NY 1929. Became one of leading qts. of inter-war period, making first recording of all the Beethoven qts. Disbanded 1942. Reorganized, with partly new membership, 1945, but finally disbanded on Léner's death, 1948.
