Le Sueur, Jean François (b Drucat-Plessiel, nr. Abbéville, 1760; d Paris, 1837). Fr. composer. Held church posts, becoming choirmaster of Nôtre Dame, Paris, 1786, and engaging large orch. to dramatize perfs. of masses and motets. Dismissed 1788 because of opposition aroused. From 1792 wrote grands opéras. Inspector, Paris Cons. 1795–1802. Succeeded Paisiello as Choirmaster to Napoleon, 1804–30. Prof. of comp., Paris Cons., from 1818. Pupils incl. Berlioz.
