Kobelius, Johann Augustin

KobeliuS, Johann Augustin, German organist and composer; b. Waehlitz, near Merseburg, Feb. 21, 1674; d. Weissenfels, Aug. 17, 1731. Following training with his grandfather, Nicolaus Brause, a Weissenfels organist, he studied organ with Christian Schieferdecker, the Weissenfels Kantor and organist; he may also have had composition lessons with J.P. Krieger. In 1702 he became organist of the Holy Trinity Church in Sangerhausen, and director of choruses there in 1703. In 1724 he also became choral director in Querfurt. In 1725 he was named Landrentmeister for the court of Saxe-Weissenfels. He wrote some 23 operas for the Weissenfels court between 1715 and 1729.
