Klenovsky, Nikolai (Semyonovich)

Klenovsky, Nikolai (Semyonovich), Russian conductor and composer; b. Odessa, 1853; d. Petrograd, July 6, 1915. He studied violin with Hrimaly and harmony with Tchaikovsky at the Moscow Cons, (graduated, 1879), then conducted at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater (1883–93) and in Tiflis, where he also was made director of the Cons. (1893). He then was deputy director of the Imperial Chapel in St. Petersburg (1902–06). He wrote 3 ballets: Prelesti gashisha (The Delights of Hashish; Moscow, 1885), Svetlana (Moscow, 1886), Sa-langa (St. Petersburg, 1900), as well as orch. works, 4 cantatas, and songs.
