Kallmann, Helmut (Max)

Kallmann, Helmut (Max), esteemed Germanborn Canadian librarian, musicologist, and editor; b. Berlin, Aug. 7, 1922. He studied music with his father. He left Germany in 1939 for London, where he was interned as a German citizen in 1940, and then was interned in Canada (1940–43); after his release, he became a naturalized Canadian citizen (1946). He took music courses at the Univ. of Toronto (B.Mus., 1949), and then became a music librarian for the CBC in 1950. He was supervisor of its music collection from 1962. From 1970 to 1987 he served as chief of the music division of the National Library of Canada in Ottawa. In 1982 he co-founded and became chair of the Canadian Musical Heritage Soc. Its series of 25 vols., of which he ed. numbers 8 and 22, was completed in 1999. He publ. a number of useful books, including a Catalogue of Canadian Composers (Toronto, 1952) and A History of Music in Canada 1534-1914 (Toronto, 1960); with G. Potvin and K. Winters, he ed. the authoritative Encyclopedia of Music in Canada (Toronto, 1981; 2nd ed., rev., 1992).
