Hirsch, Paul (Adolf)
Hirsch, Paul (Adolf), German-English music collector and bibliographer; b. Frankfurt am Main, Feb. 24, 1881; d. Cambridge, Nov. 23, 1951. He began collecting rare musical eds. in 1896, and publ, successive catalogs of his rapidly growing library. In 1936 he left Germany and was able to transport his entire collection to England. It was purchased by the British Museum in 1946, the total number of items being about 20, 000. In 1922 he began the publication of new eds. (several in facsimile, and with commentaries) of rare works. See the Music Review, XII (1951).
