Heifer, Walter, American composer; b. Lawrence, Mass., Sept. 30, 1896; d. New Rochelle, N.Y., April 16, 1959. He studied at Harvard Univ., then took courses in composition with Caussade in Paris and with Respighi in Rome. Returning to the U.S., he joined the staff of Hunter Coll. in N.Y. He wrote an orch. Fantasy on Children’s Tunes (1935), Symphony on Canadian Airs (1937), Concertino for Piano and Chamber Orch. (1947), Soliloquy for Cello and Piano, String Quartet, String Trio, Elegiac Sonata for Piano, minor piano pieces, and songs.
