Goldsbrough Arnold (Wainwright)

Goldsbrough, Arnold (Wainwright), English organist, harpsichordist, and conductor; b. Gomersal, Oct. 26, 1892; d. Tenbury Wells, Dec. 14, 1964. After studies in Bradford, he took courses in double bass, conducting, and composition at the Royal Coll. of Music in London (1920-22). In 1923 he joined its faculty, and concurrently held various posts as an organist. In 1948 he founded his own orch. in London, with which he devoted himself to the performance of early music. In 1960 the orch. became the English Chamber Orch., which subsequently gained a distinguished reputation.
