Foote, Arthur (William) (b Salem, Mass., 1853; d Boston, 1937). Amer. composer and organist. Recipient of first MA conferred at Harvard for work in mus. Later studied comp. in Paris with Stephen Heller. Org., First Unitarian Church, Boston, 1878–1910. A founder of Amer. Guild of Organists, president 1909–12. Comps. incl. orch. suites; vc. conc.; cantata The Farewell of Hiawatha; chamber mus.; vocal works; songs; pf. pieces; and org. mus. Author of books on harmony and fugue.
