Elvey, Sir George (Job)

Elvey, Sir George (Job), English organist and composer, brother of Stephen Elvey; b. Canterbury, March 27, 1816; d. Windlesham, Surrey, Dec. 9, 1893. He studied with Skeats at Canterbury Cathedral, and with Potter and Crotch at the Royal Academy of Music in London. From 1835 until 1882 he served as organist and master of the boys at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor; received a Mus.Bac. (1838) and a Mus.Doc. (1840) from Oxford; was knighted in 1871. His widow publ. a memoir, Life and Reminiscences of George J. Elvey (London, 1894). His works included 2 oratorios, The Resurrection and Ascension (London, Dec. 2, 1840) and Mount Carmel (London, June 30, 1886), as well as many pieces of church music, glees, part-songs, and organ pieces.
