Deiters, Hermann (Clemens Otto)

Deiters, Hermann (Clemens Otto) , German writer on music; b. Bonn, June 27, 1833; d. Koblenz, May 11, 1907. He studied jurisprudence in Bonn, where he took the degrees of Dr.Jur. (1854) and Dr.Phil. (1858). He taught in the gymnasia at Bonn (1858) and Duren (1869), was director of gymnasia at Konitz (1874), Posen (1878), and Bonn (1883), “Provincial- Schulrath” at Koblenz (1885–93), and assistant in the Ministry of Public Wor-ship at Berlin (1890); he retired in 1903, living thereafter in Koblenz. Deiters wrote many articles for journals. His greatest achievement was his masterly tr. into German of Thayer’s Life of Beethoven, with critical comments by Deiters (3 vols., Berlin, 1866–77; 2nd ed., with 2 additional vols. ed. by Riemann, Leipzig, 1907–08; Vols. I, II, and III re-ed. by Riemann, Leipzig, 1910–17).
