Degli Antoni, Pietro , Italian composer; b. Bologna, May 16, 1639; d. there, 1720. He pursued his career in his native city, where he was active as an instrumentalist. In 1666 he became a charter member of its Accademia Filarmonica, and later served as its principe (1676, 1684, 1696, 1700, 1705, 1708). He served as maestro di cappella at S. Maria Maggiore (from 1680) and atS. Stefano (1686–96). He played an important role in the development of the sonata da camera and the sonata da chiesa, of which notable examples may be found in his sonatas for Violin and Basso Continue, opp. 4 and 5 (Bologna, 1676, 1686). He also wrote sacred music, including the oratorio L’innocenza depressa. His brother, Giovanni Battista Degli Antoni (b. Bologna, 1636; d. there, after 1696), was an organist and composer. After studies with Giacomo Predieri, he became a member of Bologna’s Accademia Filarmonica in 1684 and later served as organist at that city’s S. Giacomo Magigore. His Ricercate for Cello or Harpsichord, op.l (Bologna, 1687), anticipate J.S. Bach’s solo suites.
