Brueggen, Frans (b Amsterdam, 1934). Dutch virtuoso of the flute and recorder, also conductor. Prof. of recorder and transverse fl., Hague Royal Cons. Visiting prof., Univ. of Calif., 1974. Pioneer of perf. on period instr. Formed avant-garde ens. Sourcream, and commissioned many works, incl. Berio's Gesti (1966). Has cond. Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Cond. Idomeneo (Amsterdam 1992).
