Baudo, Serge (Paul)

Baudo, Serge (Paul), French conductor, nephew of Paul Tortelier; b. Marseilles, July 16, 1927. His father was a prof. of oboe at the Paris Cons. He studied conducting with Fourestier and theory with Jean and Noël Gallon at the Paris Cons., winning premiers prix in harmony, percussion, chamber music, and conducting. After serving as conductor of the orch. of Radio Nice (1959–62), he conducted at the Paris Opéra (1962–65). He held the post of first conductor of the Orchestre de Paris from 1967 to 1970. On Sept. 16, 1970, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. conducting Les Contesd’Hoffmann. He was music director of the Lyons Opéra (1969–71), and then of the Orchestre Philharmonique Rhône- Alpes (later known as the Orchestre National de Lyons) from 1971 to 1987. He was also the founder-artistic director of the Berlioz Festival in Lyons (1979–89).
