Barnett, John Francis (b London, 1837; d London, 1916). Eng. composer, conductor, and pianist. Nephew of John Barnett. Studied pf. from age 6. Won Queen's Scholarship, RAM, 1849. Soloist in Mendelssohn's D minor pf. conc., cond. Spohr, London 1853. Later became pf. teacher at RCM and GSMD. Comp. several choral works, incl. The Ancient Mariner (Birmingham, 1867), The Triumph of Labour (London, 1888), and The Eve of St Agnes (London, 1913). Also sym., pf. conc., and part-songs. In 1883 completed Schubert's Sym. in E from sketches.
