Ascone, Vicente, Italian-born Uruguayan composer; b. Siderno, Aug. 16, 1897; d. Montevideo, March 5, 1979. He was taken to Uruguay as a child, where he studied trumpet and composition. In his works, he was influenced by Uruguayan folk modalities. He composed 5 operas, including Paraná Gauzú (Montevideo, July 25, 1931), 3 syms. (1945, 1955, 1959), the symphonic poem Sobre el Río Uruguay (1946), Politonal for Piano and Orch. (1967), a Trumpet Concerto (1969), a Violin Concerto (1970), and numerous songs.
