Ancina, (Giovanni) Giovenale

Ancina, (Giovanni) Giovenale, Italian composer; b. Fossano, Oct. 19, 1545; d. Saluzzo, Aug. 31, 1604. He studied medicine, philosophy, and rhetoric at the Univ. of Turin, graduating in 1567. He also studied medicine in Pavia. In 1574 he went to Rome to study theology and came under the influence of Filippo Neri, whose Congregazione dei Preti dell’Oratorio he joined in 1580. After being ordained in 1582, he served at the Naples oratory (1586–96) until being recalled to Rome. In 1602 he became bishop of Saluzzo. In 1890 he was beatified by Pope Leo XIII. Ancina publ. a valuable anthology of 3-part laudi as Tempio armonico della beatissima vergine (Rome, 1599), which includes 5 of his own laudi. He also wrote texts for various laudi.
