Allen, (Sir) Hugh (Percy) (b Reading, 1869; d Oxford, 1946). Eng. organist, conductor, and teacher. Org. scholar Christ's College, Cambridge, org. at caths. of St Asaph (1897) and Ely (1898); then of New College, Oxford (1901–18). Prof. of mus., Oxford Univ. (1918–46), and general inspirer of Oxford mus. activities. Dir. RCM (1918–37). Cond., Bach Choir 1907–20. Knighted 1920, GCVO 1935.
