The War Bride
The War Bride ★★ 2001
Slow and sometimes tedious homefront drama but Friel's a firecracker. Cockney Lily (Friel) makes a whirlwind wartime marriage to Canadian soldier Charlie (Young) and is eventually granted citizenship and shipped off to her husband's home country. Lily's in for a rude shock when she sees that she'll be living on a small hard-scrabble ranch in rural Alberta with her un-welcoming in-laws—Charlie's mother Betty (Fricker) and polio-stricken sister Sylvia (Parker). But this city sparrow is determined to make the best of things, although it's not going to be easy. 96m/C DVD .
