The Two Jakes
The Two Jakes ★★ 1990 (R)
Ten years have passed and Jake Gittes is still a private investigator in this sequel to 1974's “Chinatown.” When a murder occurs while he's digging up dirt on an affair between the wife of a real estate executive and the executive's partner, Jake must return to Chinatown to uncover the killer and face the painful memories buried there. Despite solid dialogue and effective performances, it's unreasonably difficult to follow if you haven't seen “Chinatown.” Outstanding photography by Vilmos Zsigmond. 137m/C VHS, DVD . Jack Nicholson, Harvey Keitel, Meg Tilly, Madeleine Stowe, Eli Wallach, Ruben Blades, Frederic Forrest, David Keith, Richard Farnsworth, Tracey Walter; D: Jack Nicholson; W: Robert Towne; C: Vilmos Zsigmond; M: Van Dyke Parks.
