Sleuth ★ 2007 (R)

You'd think that Law would've learned his lesson after trying to fill Caine's shoes in his “Alfie” remake. But no, here he remakes the 1972 pic, tackling the Caine role while Caine himself steps into Laurence Olivier's part. Working-class upstart Milo Tindle (Law) has been boffing the wife of rich mystery writer Andrew Wyke (Caine). Andrew invites Milo to his ultra-modern manor to discuss the situation and says he'll give his wife a divorce if Milo will stage a jewel robbery so Andrew can claim the insurance. Pinter ups the homoerotic subtext and trims a lot of Anthony Shaffer's original dialogue, but it's all for naught as Branagh seems lost without a crowd to direct. However, Caine is as reliable as ever. 86m/C DVD . GB US Michael Caine, Jude Law; D: Kenneth Branagh; W: Harold Pinter; C: Haris Zambarloukos; M: Patrick Doyle.
