Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End ★★½ 2007 (PG-13)

Like a good captain, this latest (and last?) entry in the “Pirates” franchise goes down with the ship. Familiar heroes and villains must band together to fight even worse villains, perform rescues, and go head-to-head with Chow-Yun Fat, mostly to serve up 168 minutes of non-stop spectacle. Lord Cutler Beckett (Hollander) and tentacle-faced Davy Jones (Nighy) are trying to wipe out pirates, and only Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp), Will (Bloom), and Elizabeth (Knightley) can stop him. Oh, and Captain Barbossa (Rush, who steals every scene) is back, and Captain Jack's been swallowed by a sea monster, and Keith Richards is his dad. The plot is largely nonsensical, characters switch sides of the conflict from scene to scene, and much is lost to the hectic pace and CGI effects that jump off the screen. Still, the swashbuckling and action are excellent, and it all adds up to a fun, if overstuffed, mess of a movie. Enjoy it, just don't expect it to make sense. 168m/C DVD, Blu-ray Disc .
