Portrait of 18th century playwright Antonio Jose da Silva (Pinheiro), whose family was forcibly converted from their Jewish faith by the Catholic Church. Living in Lisbon, da Silva founded a puppet theatre for which he wrote comic operas. Eventually condemned for heresy, he was executed by the Inquisition in 1739. Explicit torture scenes.
