The Inkwell
The Inkwell ★★½ 1994 (R)
Quiet teenager Drew Tate finds first love when his family spends their vacation with relatives on Martha's Vineyard. Drew is drawn into the party atmosphere of the Inkwell, the area where affluent black professionals have summered for decades. Meanwhile, political differences between Drew's former Black Panther father and his conservative uncle threaten family harmony. Everything about the film has a sugary aura, with conflicts handled tastefully. Rich directs broadly, leading to some overacting. Film is set in 1976. 112m/C VHS, DVD . Larenz Tate, Joe Morton, Phyllis Stickney, Jada Pinkett Smith; D: Matty Rich; W: Paris Qualles, Trey Ellis; C: John L. (Ndiaga) Demps Jr.; M: Terence Blanchard.
