At First Sight ★★½ 1998 (PG-13)

Slow-paced romantic drama stars Kilmer as a blind masseuse who falls for high-strung architect Sorvino. She persuades him to have an operation that restores his sight, and he's forced to adapt to a world he has never seen. Excellent supporting performances by McGillis as Kilmer's sister and Lane as the doctor that eases his transition. Kilmer does an outstanding job in making his character neither pitiful nor over-sentimental, which is rare in movies that center on disabilities. Based loosely on a case study by Dr. Oliver Sacks, whose work was also the basis for “Awakenings.” 128m/C VHS, DVD . Val Kilmer, Mira Sorvino, Kelly McGillis, Steven Weber, Bruce Davison, Nathan Lane, Ken Howard; D: Irwin Winkler; W: Steve Levitt; C: John Seale; M: Mark Isham.
