The Convent ★★ 2000 (R)

In 1960, a young woman enters a church, shoots several nuns and a priest, and then torches the place. Jump ahead to the present, as a group of college kids enter the now-condemned convent to perform a fraternity prank. Elsewhere in the dilapi dated convent, amateur Satanists perform a ritual, releasing the evil spirits held captive in the sanctuary. From this point on, the movie becomes a monster mash, as each character is either possessed, killed, or both. The only hope for the trapped youngsters is the now-grown girl who started all of this in 1960. The film is creatively shot by director Mendez, and the demon makeup is unusual, but the action owes too much to “Night of the Demons 2,” “The Church,” and the “Goth Talk” skit from “Saturday Night Live.” Horror aficionados will feel as if they've seen it all before. 79m/C VHS, DVD . Adrienne Barbeau, Coolio, Bill Moseley, Joanna Canton, Megahn Perry, Dax Miller, David Gunn; D: Mike Mendez; W: Chaton Anderson; C: Jason Lowe; M: Joseph Bishara.
