Zoilo, Annibale

Zoilo, Annibale, Italian composer; b. Rome, c. 1537; d. Loreto, 1592. He was maestro di cappella at San Luigi dei Francesi from 1561 to 1566 and at San Giovanni in Laterano from Jan. 1568 to June 1570. In 1570 he became a singer in the Papal Choir in Rome, remaining there until he left due to ill health in 1577; then was in the service of Cardinal Sirleto. After serving as maestro di cappella at Todi Cathedral (1581-84), he held that post at the Santa Casa in Loreto (from 1584). In 1577 he and Palestrina were entrusted with the revision of the Roman Gradual (Editio Medicaea). He composed both sacred and secular vocal works. He publ. Libro secondo de madrigali for 4 to 5 Voices (Rome, 1563). Other madrigals were publ. in contemporary collections.
