Mendelsohn, Alfred

Mendelsohn, Alfred, Romanian composer, conductor, and teacher; b. Bucharest, Feb. 17, 1910; d. there, May 9, 1966. He was a student of Schmidt and Marx (composition) and of Lach and Wellesz (music history) in Vienna (1927–31). Returning to Bucharest, he completed his training with Jora (composition) at the Cons. (1931–32). He taught harmony (1932–36) and was director (1936–40) at the E. Massini Cons. From 1946 to 1954 he was asst. music director of the Romanian Opera. From 1949 until his death he also was a prof, at the Cons. In 1945 he received the Enesco Prize and in 1949 was awarded the Romanian Academy Prize. While his music primarily reflects the influence of the Romantic Viennese School, he also probed the potentialities of motivic structures, suggesting the serial concepts of modern constructivists while remaining faithful to basic tonalitarianism.
