Atkinson, Robert Frank
Atkinson, Robert Frank (1871–1923). Articled to John Francis Doyle (1840–1913) of Liverpool, Atkinson opened his own office in London, and in 1912 designed the Midland Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool (completed in modified form by Stanley Hinge Hamp (1877–1968)). In 1907 he collaborated with the Chicago architect Daniel H. Burnham on the design of the steel-framed Selfridges Store in Oxford Street, London, although the architect of the façade was Francis S. Swales, who placed a Giant Order of Ionic columns (based on Philibert de l' Orme's Tuileries Palace in Paris), with panels of metal and glass between them, on the ground-floor base. This building set the style for grand Classical stores and offices in Great Britain until 1939.
