Parek, Lagle (1941—)
Estonian architect and politician. Born in 1941.
Employed by the Estonian Architectural Memorials Institute for 11 years (1972–83), Lagle Parek was charged with "anti-Soviet agitation" in 1983 and imprisoned for four years. Following her release, she pursued her political ideals, becoming the leader of the center-right Estonian National Independence Party (ERSP) from 1989 to 1993. She ran for president of Estonia in the 1992 elections, finishing fourth with 4.3% of the vote. Appointed interior minister in October 1992, Parek remained in office until November 1993, at which time she resigned amid allegations of friction between the police and the army.
